Sometimes, I go to a restaurant, mean to write a review, and, months later, never get around to it. Usually, I just move on. This time, though, even though the visit is almost a year old, I want to share with you my visit to Bouley last December. As frequent readers know, I visited Bouley for lunch while on jury duty last summer. The experience was, I wrote, nearly pitch-perfect. L’Arpege, in Paris, is widely regarded as one of the best restaurants in the world — and probably the best if you’re a vegetarian. The reviews of the place are uniformly glowing. The place can be pricey but is well worth it, at least as a “try it once” experience. Alain Passard has revolutionized haute cuisine for vegetarians, and I hope his philosophy — that gourmet food and vegetarian food don’t have to be at odds — continues to catch on. Continue reading
When you walk into Bouley, the eponymous flagship restaurant of Chef David Bouley, you’re immediately hit with the scent of apples — the walls of restaurant’s anteroom are lined with apples, from wall to wall and floor to ceiling. This is a preview of what’s to come: ingredients and ideas that are familiar, repurposed in a way that is somewhere on the edge between crazy and genius. All the while, Chef Bouley’s menu incorporates vegetarian options, making this one Michelin stared TriBeCa restaurant quite vegetarian friendly. If you’re looking for great vegetarian food in New York, look no further. Eleven Madison Park, a three-Michelin-star restaurant for 2012, really epitomized how a top restaurant should accommodate vegetarians. The food was great, the service was impeccable, and the overall experience was fantastic. EMP is, to date, my favorite New York restaurant. Continue reading
